Chiang Mai, Thailand
Please pray with us and consider making a one time donation to help with mitigation and to provide aid for communities that are suffering.
Our D1 students and JTTW staff are working hard to keep water out of the D1 girls house. Downtown Chiang Mai was hit hard after the Ping river levels hit an all time high on Thursday, spilling out into the whole city. Floodwaters up to 5 meters above the normal level have submerged some of Chiang Mai's busiest roads. The damage so far is devastating for so many communities. Many of the villages surrounding Chiang Mai are experiencing severe flooding and dangerous landslides.
I received this message from our country directors this morning: "Right now the Ping is over 5m above its normal level and rising. The river is supposed to crest around 2am. They are saying this is a historic flood. On the road over by Wooden Door Restaurant, cars are almost fully submerged.......currently water is creeping into the D1 girls yard again. It seems to be coming through the walls around the yard somehow.....praying the sandbags can hold things back. Sak and Kree are going to bring out a water pump from BHJ in case it gets bad."
We are grateful that BHJ has not experienced any flooding as of now. Our D1 girls are staying in our guest house and there will be a lot of clean up to take care of in the coming days. All the furniture on the main floor has been destroyed and has a healthy dose of mold.
Please pray for the rains to die down and for safety and protection.
The damage will be devastating for the people of Chiang Mai and the surrounding villages. We expect there will be months of major rehabilitation efforts needed to obtain some sort of normalcy after all of this.
Please consider making a donation towards mitigation, repair, and medical needs. We will continue to post updates as they come in.
